Shawn Jenkins is an entrepreneur and technology visionary known for transforming the massive employer benefits industry by moving it to the cloud. He is the co-founder and CEO of Benefitfocus and leads the company with a passion for design and engineering. Benefitfocus provides employers and insurance carriers with powerful technology to enable better health, wealth and wellness decisions.
Jenkins has received numerous awards and recognitions, including being recognized as a South Carolina Ambassador for Economic Development by the South Carolina Department of Commerce and one of the 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs at the Goldman Sachs Builders and Innovators Summit. He also received the Trailblazer Award from the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and the ThinkTEC Award for leadership in advancing a knowledge-based economy in the Charleston region. Jenkins has been featured in multiple publications including the prestigious New York Times Corner Office column.
With a passion for engineering and education, Jenkins serves on the Advisory Board for the School of Computing at Clemson University and was a member of the Medical University of South Carolina Foundation Board of Directors, the College of Charleston Board of Governors, the Charleston Southern University Board of Visitors and the Lowcountry Food Bank Board of Directors. Prior to founding Benefitfocus, he served as Vice President at American Pensions.
Jenkins has focused his personal philanthropy on advancing children's health care through his contributions to MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital.
Jenkins holds an MBA from Charleston Southern University, a bachelor's degree from Geneva College, and has his commercial pilot's license. He lives in Mount Pleasant with his wife and three children.
Mason Holland, one of our founders, has been our Executive Chairman and a member of our board of directors since our founding in June 2000. He is responsible for the coordination of strategic partnerships with industry leaders and client relations. Mr. Holland founded American Pensions, Inc. in 1988, serving as its Chairman and President from 1988 to 2003. Mr. Holland’s other ventures have included establishing Holland Properties, LLC, a real estate development firm, in 1989, and acquiring Eclipse Aerospace, Inc., a jet aircraft manufacturer, in May 2009, for which he serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Holland attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.
Ray August serves as President and Chief Operating Officer. He joined the company in 2014 and oversees operational functions, sales and customer support efforts. Prior to joining the company, Mr. August served as the General Manager for the Financial Services division of CSC, a multi-billion dollar organization with over 10,000 employees around the world. During his sixteen years at CSC, Mr. August held several leadership roles. Prior to CSC, Mr. August was Chief Technology Officer at Great Plains Software. Previously Mr. August held a management position at Price Waterhouse. He earned a B.S. in Accounting from the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina.
Jeff Laborde serves as Chief Financial Officer. He joined the company in 2016 and brings to Benefitfocus extensive strategic decision-making skills and financial leadership in the technology sector including specific experience in HCM applications, cloud software operations and capital markets. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Laborde served most recently as the Chief Financial Officer of Infor, Inc. during the company’s expansion of both its SaaS delivery capabilities and new vertical market initiatives. As the Chief Financial Officer of SumTotal Systems, LLC, Mr. Laborde oversaw the company’s transition to SaaS and its ultimate sale in October 2014 to Skillsoft. Prior to SumTotal Systems, Mr. Laborde served technology businesses large and small across the globe as a Managing Director and Vice President in the Goldman, Sachs & Co. Technology, Media & Telecom Investment Banking Group and prior to that as a Vice President in Credit Suisse First Boston’s Technology Investment Banking Group. Mr. Laborde started his career in finance as an auditor for Arthur Andersen LLP in its Audit and Business Advisory – Enterprise Group. Mr. Laborde received his MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and his BS in Commerce, Business Administration and Accounting from Washington and Lee University. Mr. Laborde received his CPA in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
